Climate change experts are warning that the drought facing the country could spill over to next year. They said the country should ready itself with long-term plans and strategies to respond and mitigate the impact of erratic in weather patterns.
“We are not yet out of the woods. Rains are not there. This is confirmed by reports released by weathermen,” said Kenya Red Cross Society (KRCS) head of policy, Ahamed Idris, adding: “There will be a higher need of communities in need of humanitarian assistance.
We shall have to review the Red Cross appeal to raise cash for emergency response.” Meteorological department of Kenya (MET) assistant director, Peter Macharia defended his team against accusations that they had failed to sufficiently share correct information with members of the public.
“Data generated for use to assist in the management of weather and land is often ignored by the public. It’s interesting to see livestock herders moving from an area and others moving into the same area,” he said.
Trends indicate that the temperatures involved in this drought are hotter than they would have been without the influence of climate change, according to the experts.
