Uhuru Kenyatta’s son Daniel Owira of the famous Otonglo narrative was a student at Highway secondary school in Nairobi
– The 22-year-old opened up about how much time he spends with his father saying that he doesn’t meet him as often
– Owira, however, said he can still reach the president whenever he wants
Daniel Owira, the boy President Uhuru Kenyatta adopted two years ago after he won the president’s heart with laughter, has confessed that he’s not seeing the head of state as much as many think.
“The president is like my father,” Owira, who joined Multimedia University of Kenya this year to study Film and Animation after he scored a C+ at Highway Secondary School said.
“He pays my fees. He is my mentor and my best friend. I call him dad.”
David, popularly know as ‘Otonglo Boy’, was adopted by Uhuru who pledged to meet all his education needs up to university in 2013.
Owira, however, said that he doesn’t get to meet the president a lot since he is a busy man, but, he still can reach him if he wants to speak to him.
“Not as frequent. He is very busy,” Owira told SDE in the interview.
“I saw him last in August 2015. I have a way of getting a word to him though.”
Owira came into the limelight during the 2013 Kenya Schools, Colleges and Universities Drama Festivals in Mombasa when he recited a hilarious poem entitled Otongolo that left the Head of State in stitches.
The president thereafter hosted the boy at State House Nairobi, where he pledged to pay the remainder of his high school fees.
Kenyatta also helped his family by clearing his mum’s hospital bill of KSh 120,000 bill at Nairobi West Hospital where she was admitted after a wall collapsed on her in South B estate in May, 2015.
The 22-year-old, who has been in numerous adverts and campaigns already, says that fame hasn’t changed him. He says, however, it has changed some around him.
“I became a ‘celeb’ and now, for some, reason, my friends and most people I know think I have a lot money to dish out, which is not the case,” he said. “Being on TV and in the news has humbled me. It’s been a good experience, quite challenging at times.”
