The family of a boy who was circumcised and placed in seclusion in Imenti South sub-county, Meru county, last month has asked police to arrest his caregiver for allegedly beating him to a pulp.
The boy’s father Bedan Kinoti said his son was beaten by a group of men for allegedly sleeping too much, saying that he only came to learn about it after the boy failed to come out of the house after the end of seclusion period.
Family sources told the People Daily that the caregiver is a cousin to the initiate and has since gone into hiding. The boy, who hails from Kanyakine location is admitted at Mitunguu hospital where he is under going treatment.
“His condition is so severe that he cannot walk,” said Kinoti. Hospital Medical Superintendent Elias Kiambi said the boy would have to undergo corrective surgery to enable a deep wound on the leg to heal. Speaking at the hospital after a prominent Nairobi-based lawyer and Meru county senator aspirant Mugambi Manyara paid the hospital bill, Kiambi said the boy was admitted at the facility on December 19, last year.
Manyara urged the police to arrest the culprits and ensure that they are charged in court saying that circumcision is not a punishment but a rite of passage.
He said it is wrong to allow such suspects to roam freely. “ I urge the police to arrest and prosecute the culprits who are roaming freely intimidating the boy’s kin. The lawyer wondered why no action has been taken against the culprits three weeks after the incident despite the matter having been reported to the police immediately.
